
The Department of Psychiatry at GIMSR is a full-fledged psychiatric assessment and treatment service. It is equipped with the latest treatment modalities, to manage the most complex of psychiatric illnesses and stress related problems. It has seven specialist psychiatrists, with various individual expertise and interests, alongside a clinical psychologist, six postgraduate psychiatry trainees, and nursing staff. A holistic and patient centred care is provided, aiming at not just symptom alleviation, but also improvement of the person’s functioning, integration into family, and role in the society.
1. Two inpatient wards for male and female patients, with 15 beds each.
2. GIMSR Neuromodulation Centre - Magventure rTMS (repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) with first of its kind Atlas Neuro Navigation System. This delivers high precision treatment with personalised coil position that improves accuracy and minimizes side effects in treatment of Major Depressive disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorders.
3. Psychometric Assessments from Personality testing to IQ tests are available.
The dept has an intake of 2 postgraduates (MD) in Psychiatry every year (6 postgraduates at any one point of time). The post graduate program emphasizes both theoretical knowledge and practical experience through rigorous coursework covering areas such as psychopathology, pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, and research methodologies. Additionally, students gain hands-on experience in assessing patients, developing treatment plans, and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams in outpatient and inpatient settings. Graduates of MD Psychiatry program are also expected to do a thesis under faculty guidance.
The dept has regular 2-week postings for undergraduate medical students, besides postings opted for psychiatry electives. Faculty take 40 psychiatry interactive lectures for final year MBBS students. We also train Applied Psychology students within GITAM university, as well as psychology students from other parts of the country on request.
