About the department

Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy at GIMSR institute stands as a beacon of excellence in clinical care, skin health education and research. Our mission is to provide high-quality dermatological care to patients across all economic backgrounds. The department has been incorporating the latest treatment protocols and contributing remarkably with an ultimate goal to provide the best possible care to patients to meet their diverse needs.

We provide outpatient and in-patient services, weekly sub-speciality clinics and personalized treatment plans. Our clinical services cover conditions such as infections, infestations, papulo-squamous disorders, auto-immune diseases, blistering disorders, STDs, psycho-cutaneous, pre-malignant & malignant conditions with a specific mention of leprosy and HIV. With the advanced equipment available, we are providing various Dermato-Surgical and Aesthetic procedures as day care procedures. 

Well qualified and experienced faculty besides treating patients, are also constantly engaged in teaching and training of undergraduates, postgraduates, paramedical and nursing students besides research work and keeping abreast with the latest in the field by attending scientific conferences, CMEs, and workshops. Faculty and PGs are actively involved in organizing and conducting national and state health education programmes.

 

Academics

Medical Education and Training

Undergraduate Training (MBBS): Our department provides comprehensive training to undergraduates in clinical dermatology, sexually transmitted diseases, and leprosy. Students learn the fundamentals of clinical history-taking, physical examination, diagnosis, and management of common dermatological conditions. They gain experience through structured rotation in outpatient clinics and inpatient wards.

Postgraduate Training (MD DVL): Our department maintains a strong commitment to academic excellence, adhering strictly to a well-structured postgraduate teaching schedule. Regular academic activities such as seminars, journal clubs, guest lectures, clinico-pathological case discussions and case presentations are an integral part of the curriculum. Post-graduation students are actively encouraged and guided to present posters and papers at state and national conferences, fostering their academic and research potential. They are also trained to efficiently manage dermatological emergencies, ensuring comprehensive skill development. Workshops and conferences are conducted to gain hands-on experience.

B) Laser Therapy Room

  • The department has an aesthetic clinic with state-of-the-art laser equipment (Fractional Co₂ Laser, Q Switched Nd: YAG Laser, Long pulsed Nd: YAG Laser, Diode laser, IPL, MNRF, and Non-ablative RF).

C) Skin Laboratory

  • Diagnostic outpatient-based and bedside investigations like KOH Mount examination, slit skin smear, Tzanck smear, Gram staining ,and AFB Staining evaluation are carried out on a regular basis in our well-maintained skin laboratory.

D) Photo Therapy Room

  • The department is equipped with a whole body NBUVB phototherapy unit, PUVA/NBUVB hand foot panel unit and excimer laser for targeted phototherapy.

E) Minor OT:

  • The department maintains a well-equipped procedure room, where minor investigative and therapeutic procedures are carried out routinely.

The department offers a wide range of personalized and tailored services to meet each patient’s unique needs. 

  • Biopsy: Skin, Scalp & Nail
  • Patch testing – for testing allergic reactions
  • Whole body, Hand & foot Targeted Photo Therapy and Excimer laser – for Vitiligo, Psoriasis, Lichen Planus, etc.
  • Radiofrequency – for removal of skin tags, warts, moles, etc.
  • Scar treatments – Subcision, Dermaroller, and Laser scar revision
  • Skin Intra-lesional injection and Nail matrix injection
  • Cryotherapy for benign and pre-malignant skin disorders
  • Nail surgeries: Partial and Total nail avulsion
  • Vitiligo surgeries – Mini punch grafting and Blister grafting
  • Ear-lobe repair
  • Cyst excision
  • Chemical peels
  • Laser Tattoo Removal
  • Laser hair removal with diode/ Nd: YAG
  • Fractional CO2 Laser for scars, skin rejuvenation
  • MNRF: scars, stretch marks, face contouring
  • PRP: hair loss, acne scars, skin rejuvenation
  • PRF: non-healing ulcers
  • Dermatoscopy/Trichoscopy
  • Autologous Serum Skin Test(ASST)
  • Iontophoresis- hyperhidrosis

 

Patient Care Services

Outpatient Department (OPD): 

  • Our department offers a well-organized spacious air conditioned outpatient facility with highly trained nursing staff to provide quality patient care.
  • Sub-specialty clinics - Leprosy clinic, Pigmentary disorder clinic, Vesiculo bullous Disorder Clinic, Psoriasis Clinic, Autoimmune disease clinic, Vitiligo Clinic and STD clinic.

Inpatient Services (IPD):

  • We have a well-equipped in patient ward with 30 beds for both male and female patients to deliver patient centered care.

Emergency Care: 

  • An acute skin failure setting is available in the ward for treating dermatological emergencies.

Preventive Medicine and Health Education: 

  • The department also emphasizes on public health awareness by observing various health days like Psoriasis Day, Vitiligo Day, Leprosy day, AIDS day and World Skin Health Day at community level.

Medical Camps and Outreach Activities

  • Our faculty and postgraduates actively participate in medical camps to gain insights and contribute to public health.

Collaboration with Subspecialties

Collaborative role of dermatology in managing complex medical conditions through inter-disciplinary partnerships with other medical sub-specialities.

  • General medicine for a multidisciplinary approach to autoimmune conditions.
  • Paediatrics in treating paediatric dermatology cases.
  • General surgery for Dermato-Surgical training like suturing techniques etc.
  • Pathology for clinic-pathological correlation.
