
The Department of General Surgery offers a comprehensive range of both general and super-specialty surgical services. It is structured into five specialized units, each led by experienced faculty members. The fourth unit is led by our esteemed Head of Department, Dr. Laxman, who also oversees the department's academic and clinical operations.
Each of the remaining units is headed by dedicated Professors, and Associate Professors, ensuring high standards of patient care, teaching, and research.
Our department operates regular services from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, while emergency surgical care is available round-the-clock (24/7) to manage critical and trauma cases efficiently.

The GIMSR General Surgery Department offers a comprehensive range of surgical services, including thyroid surgery, abdominal surgery, breast surgery, and vascular surgery. They also have facilities for laparoscopic surgery, such as cholecystectomy, appendectomy, and hernia repairs. Additionally, the department includes an out-patient department, upper and lower GI endoscopy, and 11 well-equipped operation theaters.
Our department offers academic programs for both undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) students.
Currently, we have three active PG batches: 2022–23 2023–24 2024–25
Each PG batch consists of 6 students, bringing the total number of PG students to 18.
On the undergraduate side, we also have three active batches:
2021–22 batch with 150 students
2022–23 batch with 124 students
2023–24 batch with 153 students
The department continues to maintain a strong academic environment, supporting students across various levels of study.
Breast Cancer Awareness Program & Breast Cancer Week – 21st October 2024
The Department of Surgery successfully conducted a Breast Cancer Awareness Program in observance of Breast Cancer Week on 21st October 2024. The event aimed to raise awareness about early detection, prevention, and treatment of breast cancer. Various informative sessions and interactive activities were organized, receiving enthusiastic participation from both students and faculty.
Surgery Foundation Zonal Workshop & CME in Collaboration with ASI – 26th April 2025
On 26th April 2025, the Department of Surgery hosted the Surgery Foundation Zonal Workshop & Continuing Medical Education (CME) program in collaboration with the Association of Surgeons of India (ASI). The workshop featured expert-led sessions, hands-on training, and case discussions, enriching the knowledge and skills of budding surgeons.
The event saw participation from over 150 students, including attendees from our institution as well as from other medical colleges, making it a grand academic success.
