The Department of Fine and Performing Arts aims to synthesise theory and practice in young artists in the true sense. The department’s faculty and the curriculum are well-equipped to meet the academic pursuits' traditional and modern needs. The rigorous practical and theoretical courses curriculum in all the art forms follows a well-constructed hierarchical pattern with a modern University approach that aims at delivering the students the best of the knowledge in a semester structure that is otherwise taught in a Guru Shishya Parampara traditionally. The Department would also organise Programs, Lecture demonstrations, and Workshops by industry experts in the various fields of Fine and Performing Arts for an overall exposure to the students. The creative benefits of engaging in Fine and Performing Arts are manifold for Engineering, Sciences, Management, Business, Humanities, and Social Sciences students. These courses help develop visual-spatial skills crucial for engineering design and innovation and enhance cognitive flexibility, enabling students to approach technical problems with creative solutions. Participating in the arts also fosters teamwork, communication, and presentation skills essential for professional success. The therapeutic aspects of engaging in creative activities also significantly reduce stress and improve mental well-being, contributing to a more balanced and fulfilling student life. Integrating Fine and Performing Arts electives into the curriculum at GITAM broadens students’ academic horizons and equips them with versatile skills that enhance their professional and personal growth.
Application Domain Experience of Faculty
The Curriculum gives a holistic understanding of the Historical, Cultural, Spiritual, Philosophical, and Sociological knowledge of Arts. The students who enrol in these Minor programs can further opt for a variety of Programs at their postgraduate level, like Indian Dance, Theatre Arts, Indology, Musicology, Rhythmology, or direct Master’s into any of the Art forms learned.
One of the department’s primary strengths is its interdisciplinary approach, which bridges the gap between technical and creative fields. Moreover, by engaging with these art forms, students acquire profound insights into cultural, heritage, and historical contexts, significantly enriching their educational journey. This integration benefits students by enhancing their problem-solving capabilities, fostering innovative thinking, and encouraging a broader perspective on their primary disciplines. The courses, led by experienced and distinguished faculty members, provide personalised guidance and mentorship, helping students explore and develop their creative potential. The department’s state-of-the-art facilities, including advanced studios, theatres, and galleries, create an inspiring environment that encourages artistic experimentation and expression.
A distinctive feature of GITAM’s approach is the opportunity for students to learn these arts as part of their academic curriculum, ensuring that arts education is inclusive and accessible. This initiative aligns with GITAM’s commitment to Liberal Arts Education, as advocated by the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, emphasising a well-rounded, interdisciplinary approach to learning.
GITAM is a culturally vibrant campus with many activities happening now and then. The Department of Fine and Performing Arts students would have ample scope to showcase their talent to many audiences with professional training for concerts, choreographies, and directions. There are many positions that a professional can pursue in the performing arts industry, ranging from creative roles to more technical roles. These programs are structured as certificate courses, allowing students to gain specialised knowledge and skills in these traditional art forms. Additionally, performance opportunities are regularly offered in various programs organised by GITAM, allowing students to showcase their talents and gain practical experience. The department also hosts numerous workshops and seminars, further enhancing the educational experience by exposing students to diverse artistic techniques and perspectives. Those skilled at performing, creating art, or managing artists may find jobs in this industry interesting.
