Diploma in English Communication Skills

With a highly interactive and learner-centred format, this programme is the advanced phase, which builds on the certificate course in basic English skills. It is designed with the special requirements of foreign students pursuing higher education in India through the medium of English and who are not native speakers of English in mind. It has modules devoted to imparting knowledge of effective communication, advanced pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary skills; training in reading varied documents, public speaking, presentation and meeting skills; and training in various kinds of professional correspondence, resume writing and interview skills. The programme will have a regular periodic assessment and a final oral (viva voce) and written examination as compulsory requirements to complete the course successfully.

Diploma in English Communication Skills

Credits: 6 (3 Theory and 3 Practical)

PHASES:

1. Certificate in Basic English Communication Skills (3 months, 60 sessions, 6 hours per week followed by Oral and Written Examinations)

Eligibility: 10 + 2 or Equivalent

2. Diploma in English Communication Skills (3 months, 60 sessions, 6 hours per week,

followed by Oral and Written Examinations)

Eligibility: Completion of the above Certificate course in Basic English Communication Skills.

3. The total duration of the diploma is 6 months, including the 3-month certificate course.

Students may opt-out at the end of 3 months and obtain the Certificate. Those interested in

obtaining the Diploma must continue for another 3 months.

 

Objectives:

1. Enable students to review the grammatical forms of English and the use of these in

specific communicative contexts

2. Equip students with the skills and strategies to improve their competence in LSRW

skills in English

3. Motivate students to develop their ability to read and comprehend more complex texts

and communicate their thoughts and ideas through speech and writing

4. Prepare students to communicate effectively for task accomplishment and goal

achievement in academics and early stages of their careers

 

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion, students will

1. demonstrate enhanced fluency and pronunciation

2. improve their ability to comprehend what they listen to and read

3. write fairly well and produce written texts using correct grammatical structures

4. make short presentations and participate in group discussions

5. be able to prepare a resume, respond to general interview questions and handle

moderately complex correspondence in English

 

Pedagogy:

● Language exercises and interactive practice sessions for each topic

These include Role Plays, Language Games, Group Discussions, Reading and Writing Tasks.

● Integrated Skills Approach will be used for developing comprehension (Listening and

Reading) and communication (Speaking and Writing) skills.

● Computer-aided teaching-learning will be incorporated in addition to live classroom

sessions.

● Activities would include targeted practice to achieve set language learning goals and scaffolding activities to help each learner reinforce the learning and bridge

gaps.

 

Materials:

● Learners would be exposed to authentic materials from different sources for language

use in social and academic contexts

● Worksheets for Reading, Writing, Grammar and Vocabulary would be

developed/compiled

● Audiovisual materials for practising listening and improving listening comprehension

across varied accents (native and non-native)

 

Evaluation:

● 40 Marks: Internal Assessments comprising various specific tasks to assess LSRW

skills as well as grammar and vocabulary in an integrated manner

● 40 Marks: End of Course Written Examination

● 20 Marks: Viva voce
