Department of Economics

Economics in recent times has moved beyond the realm of a discipline to become a way of life. The ‘limited resources, unlimited wants’ problem, which forms the foundation of economics, is increasingly becoming a survival problem for mankind at large. As individuals, we are struggling with incessant inflation, stubborn debts, a crunching job market and lower standards of living. As a collective, we are grappling with scarcity and hoarding, poverty and inequitable resource allocation, fund misappropriation and growing debts, energy crises and resource wars. At GSHSS, the Department of Economics is committed to providing a foundation on what to think about these issues, negotiate the challenges and shape a better future.

Career Options

The competitive advantage of the Department is its application-orientation. Students are provided hands-on training in predictive modelling and statistical analysis on industry-favourite software packages like STATA, EVIEWS, R, etc, by qualified applied economists. The application-orientation prepares them for careers in academics, in public administration, in organizations like J.P. Morgan, Goldman & Sachs, Ernst & Young, etc and in policy think-tanks like RBI, NIPFP, IMF, ADB and the World Bank.

Courses

The Department offers a Ph.D. Program, a Master’s Program and different tiers of Undergraduate Programs in accordance with New Education Policy, 2020. The curricula are designed to first instil in students a sense of wonder, acquaint them with a basic understanding of how markets work, hone them with the critical skills to appreciate what works and question what doesn’t; and finally equip them with the analytical and applied skills directed towards problem-solving and policy making. The curricula also offer an extensive spectrum of specialized papers covering the canonical frontiers like Monetary Economics, Financial Economics, International Trade and Development Economics to newer frontiers like Fintech, Health Economics, Behavioural Economics, Circular Economy, Law and Economics.
