Department of English and Other Languages
The Department of English and Other Languages, GSHSS, has been engaged in training students across all disciplines in language skills. At present, it offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs in English, as well as Minor courses in English and Spanish. In addition, the English faculty offer elective courses in English for Communicative and Professional Uses, Public Speaking, Business Communication & Value Sciences, Soft Skills, Critical Thinking and Academic Writing.

The department publications include authored books, scholarly editions, collections of research papers, journal articles, and works in various genres of creative writing.
Comprehensive Curriculum
The department offers English Communication programmes designed to enhance the student’s language skills as well as their critical and creative thinking abilities. Students of English Studies at the BA and MA levels are guided to read, analyze, understand and interpret texts from British, American, Indian and World literatures across the ages in a variety of genres.
Career Options
This diverse training opens up many avenues for further studies and professions for our students: they can become teachers, editors, publishers, advertisers or researchers. Their practical command over language and theoretical knowledge of the world also befits them to venture into careers as varied as public health, data analysis and large language modelling.
Courses Offered
The department offers Undergraduate, Post-Graduate and Doctoral Programs. It offers a well-rounded curriculum in literary studies to BA and MA students and Doctoral Scholars. Students are offered courses in British, American, Indian and other postcolonial literary traditions. They can also select from a wide range of elective courses. Undergraduate students can opt for courses in transmedia storytelling, popular culture, travel writing, digital humanities and linguistics. The postgraduate degree offers advanced courses in linguistics, cultural studies and literary criticism. These students are also offered the chance to hone their skills in academic and professional courses in research methodology, copyediting, ecocriticism, translation theory, gender studies, Dalit studies and pedagogical theory and practice. The department houses an English Lab that assists in the acquisition of practical language skills as well as a preliminary understanding of linguistic processes.
