Master of Science in Biotechnology

GITAM’s two-year Master of Science in Biotechnology programme, offered at our Visakhapatnam campus, provides a comprehensive understanding of biotechnology and equips students with the expertise to apply biotechnological techniques in engineering, design, and technology. The curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including Bioinformatics, Genomics and Proteomics, Biochemical and Biophysical Techniques, and more.

Students enrolled in this programme gain valuable insights into the practical applications of biotechnology in everyday life. Microbes play a crucial role in treating various diseases and addressing deficiency problems, making this a significant area of biotechnological research.

Master of Science in Biotechnology

Eligibility

A minimum of 50% or 5.0 CGPA aggregate marks in B.Sc. with Biological Science / Chemistry / Bioinformatics / BEM / B.Sc. Food Science / Home Science / B.Pharm. / BPT / MLT / BDS / B.Sc. Agriculture / B.Tech. Biotechnology its equivalent and Qualified in GAT.

Scope of the Programme

The field of biotechnology has witnessed a rapid expansion due to advancements in genetic engineering and the application of genetically modified organisms in various aspects of daily life. This has broadened the scope of biotechnology significantly, and it continues to grow.

From large-scale pharmaceutical industries to agriculture, cosmetics, and food production, biotechnology plays a vital role. With knowledge in immunology and virology, biotechnologists contribute significantly to preventing pandemics, developing immunity, and creating vaccines.

Postgraduate degree holders in biotechnology often find fulfilling careers in research and development. Key employers for BSc Biotechnology graduates include government hospitals, bioindustries, and research institutions.

Merit-Based Scholarships

The scholarship from GAT/National/State Entrance Tests applies only in the first year. To continue receiving it in subsequent years, a minimum CGPA of 8.0 must be maintained.

Apart from the above, the following scholarships are also offered to eligible students.

  • Employee Children Scholarships: (60%, 40%, and 20%)
  • Loyalty Scholarships: (10% for Any alumni returning to do higher studies/Children of Alumni/Real siblings (Not applicable to step siblings or cousins)/Children of retired employees of GITAM/Spouse of GITAM employees).
  • Sports Scholarships: (100%, 75%, 50%, 25% and 15%)

Need-Based Scholarships

  • To be eligible for the need-based scholarship, the combined income of both parents/guardians of the eligible student/If the student is married, the combined income of the family, i.e., the student's and spouse's income, must be less than 8.00 LPA.
  • The candidates admitted through merit scholarship in the slabs of 75%, 60%, 40%, 25%,and 15%, and the parents/guardians combined income is less than the prescribed limits are eligible for the additional need-based scholarship.

Scholarships For Accommodation

  • In addition, students awarded need-based scholarships after merit scholarships will receive an additional 20% scholarship specifically allocated for hostel fees at GITAM for slabs: 15%, 25%, 40%, and 60%.
  • Students awarded 75% & 100% scholarships are also awarded the same percentage in the hostel and food charges.
