Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management, popularly known as GITAM was founded in 1980 by an inspired group of eminent intellectuals and industrialists of Andhra Pradesh led by Dr.M.V.V.S.Murthi, Former Member of Parliament and popular philanthropist .
The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India on the advice of the UGC has declared Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management (GITAM) comprising (1) College of Engineering and (2) College of Science as a “deemed to be university” u/s 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 on 13th August, 2007 (vide MHRD notification No.F.9-37/2006-U.3 dated 13th August, 2007) Subsequently in June, 2008 the MHRD approved the inclusion of (i) College of Management Studies and (ii) College of Pharmacy under the ambit of the University (vide MHRD notification No.F.10-6/2007-U.3 (A) dated 13th June, 2008).
