Sustainable development is the “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the abilities of future generations to meet their own needs”. Sustainable development guarantees the local population a non-decreasing level of well being in the long term, without compromising the possibilities of development of surrounding areas and thus contributing towards reducing the harmful effects of development on the biosphere.

Urbanisation is highly associated with economic development, and it has to be implemented in ways that are social, economically, politically and environmentally acceptable. Sustainable urban development should achieve a balance between the development of urban and semi-urban areas and protection of the environment. The poor of the urban and suburban areas should also be the centre of its vision in providing employment, shelter and basic services and amenities.

In light of the importance of sustainable urban development, Government of India has introduced several schemes for sustainable urban development. Realizing its social responsibility, GITAM has established a ‘Centre for Sustainable Urban Development’ (CSUD) in the month of November-2009.
