The department of biochemistry was started in the
academic year 2001 – 2002 with an intake of 24
students for conducting a two-year M.Sc. Degree
course in Biochemistry. The students are admitted on
the basis of the ranks obtained by them in the
common entrance test, AUCET conducted by Andhra
University, Visakhapatnam. The department is
accommodated in Sir C.V. Raman Bhavan (Science
College building) in GITAM campus. The department is
provided with two classrooms and two laboratories
for training the students in Biochemistry and allied
subjects as per the approved syllabus of Andhra
University. The laboratories are equipped with
required chemicals, glassware and basic instruments
to carry out stipulated laboratory work and
additional instruments are being procured for smooth
conduct of practical classes. Weekly seminars are
held in the afternoon on all Mondays in which M.Sc.
Biochemistry (Previous) and (Final) students present
Seminars on topics chosen by them or assigned to
them. All teachers and students participate in the
Seminars and discuss about the latest developments
in the topics freely. 24 students of first batch of
M.Sc. Biochemistry students (2001-2003) have
appeared for the University examinations and 22 of
them have passed the examination with a pass
percentage of 92. Some of the first batch students
have qualified in CSIR-UGC Net.
University Grants Commission, New Delhi has
sanctioned research projects (minor and major) to
two teach\ers to carry out research in the
department.
