     Biotechnology is, highly trans-disciplinary with foundations in many fields including cell and molecular biology, physiology, immunology, microbiology, genetics, biochemistry and chemical, process and environmental engineering. Biotechnology has already begun to change traditional industries such as food processing and fermentation. It has given rise to the development of a whole new technology for industrial production of hormones, antibiotics and other chemicals, food and energy sources and processing of waste materials. Industry must be staffed by trained biotechnologists who should not only have a sound basis of biological knowledge, but a thorough grounding in engineering methods.

In the light of the above and broad spectrum of applicability and also the need to update one's information and knowledge, GITAM the prestigious institution is offering the undergraduate program (B.Tech) in Biotechnology since the year 2002. The Departmental Laboratories are well equipped with modern instruments in the fields of Biochemistry, Microbiology, Chemical Engineering, Plant Cell and Tissue Culture, Bioprocess design, Fluid Mechanics, Heat and Mass Transfer and Industrial Biotechnology etc. The Department has a good faculty strength in different fields of specializations such as Reaction Engg, environmental Engg, Biophysical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Plant Biotechnology, Chemical Engg, Pharmaceutical Biotechnology etc.
