About Department

Welcome to the Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering at GITAM Institute of Technology, GITAM University, Visakhapatnam. The Electrical & Electronics Engineering Department is one of the oldest Departments of the Institute which was established in the year 1980. Since its inception the Department strives for excellence in teaching, research and professional services to the industry so as to achieve eminence in selected niche areas of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. The Department has well equipped laboratories such as Electrical Machines laboratory, Power Systems Laboratory, Control Systems laboratory, Electrical Measurements laboratory, Power Electronics & Drives Laboratory, Electrical workshop & Computer laboratory. The Department has undertaken a number of research projects/schemes with the financial assistance from UGC, DST and MHRD. The Department is also actively engaged in research, consultancy and testing in the area of Power Systems.

The Department offers four year B.Tech course in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Two year M.Tech course in Power System & Automation and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering. Both B.Tech and M.Tech programmes attract the brightest students of the country and abroad every year. All UG & PG programmes of the Department are accredited by NAAC with “A” Grade.

The Department has been in the forefront of advanced research in the emerging areas of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and has also been very pro-active in interaction with industry and technology development. The Department has been a catalyst in the growth and development of knowledge society. Further, state-of-the-art laboratory and infrastructure facilities effectively aid teaching and learning process.

About Faculty

Over the past 33 years with the active participation of dedicated and committed faculty, the Department produced some of the stalwarts in the field and emerged as one of the most reputed Electrical and Electronics Engineering Departments in the country. At present there are over 30 highly qualified teachers and 12 skilled technical staff. The faculty in the Department is a rich blend of personnel with industrial and professional experience. The faculty are engaged in active research in the areas of Optimal Power flows, Power Quality, Renewable Energy, Machine Designing, Power electronic drives, Bearingless Drives, Fault Tolerant Systems, Distributed Generation and Energy Management. The breadth and depth of the research interests of the academic staff ensures a high standard of lecture courses and provides excellent opportunities for challenging and stimulating projects.

The research in the Department is very active and is consistently strives along with industry in producing projects for a better world. The R&D has several projects duly sponsored by government societies like DST, UGC, MHRD etc .Some of the projects are “Design and Analysis of Hybrid Decoupled Intelligent Controller for Self Bearing Switched Reluctance Motor”, “Commutator motor control using IGBT’s ”etc. Other major research strands include FACTS and their integration in power systems, integrated design of electrical machines and drives and electromagnetic modeling. The Department conducted several workshops which include “Wide Area Monitoring and Control of Sustainable Power Systems", Evolutionary Computing Techniques for Power Control and Drives", etc.

About Students

In the new knowledge-based economy, engineering has become increasingly multi-disciplinary in nature. To prepare students for this new environment, an innovative and broad-based curriculum has been developed. Students are monitored & mentored continuously with the view to transform every individual into a well disciplined and professional citizen. The aim is to produce engineers who are flexible across disciplines and able to apply their knowledge and skills and solve complex problems. It does aim to produce thinking engineers, who will go on to create new technologies for the future. Students are encouraged to participate in various activities in & out of the campus. The Department has started various student professional societies like IE, ISTE ,IEEE- PES Student chapters to enhance and extend their knowledge & make themselves in par with present developing world.

Students publish their works in reputed Conferences and Symposiums at both national and international level. Students are sent to Industrial tours for extensive Industry interaction. The placement record of the Department has always been impressive. Almost all the students are getting placements before they leave the campus. We encourage the undergraduate and post graduate students to do apply for R & D Grants from various organizations and some of the projects sanctioned are "Design & Analysis of Train position detector and accident prevention module with auto control on regenerative brakes" by Institution of Engineers, INDIA. Alumni of Electrical Engineering Department are very well placed in all sectors and have reached to the top level positions in the state/centre government organizations and in the public sector undertakings including NAVRATNA companies. Our Students have successfully participated in technical festivals organized by other Universities. The department regularly conducts student IEEE Conferences on Recent Trends in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
